Instead of her | 2013

Performance with a video screening and narration, 10min, Seoul, South Korea.

nstead of Her is a performance work that combines video projected onto unbleached cotton cloth with live narration. The women in the video speak directly about their own experiences of social violence, sexual violence, and domestic abuse. Behind the screen, the performer sits and reads aloud their words, recomposed into the form of an edited poem, dubbing their voices with her own. This act of voicing another's language — of speaking someone else's words as if they were one's own — transforms individual testimony into collective language, giving place to voices that were never allowed to be heard.
